Teen Court Mock Trial Team: Back-to-Back Champions

Teen Court 2020 Mock Trial Team at BCC Meeting
Teen Court Mock Trial Team at BCC Meeting

We congratulate our Teen Court Mock Trial Team on their second, consecutive state win!

These amazing teenagers were honored by the Clay County Board of County Commissioners at a meeting early this week.  Teen Court Manager Michelle Taylor and Supervisor Stacey Smith spoke of the hurdles our Mock Trial team had to get over to even compete this year due to COVID and other challenges.  These are awesome young people dedicating extra time and energy into a program that helps other teens while giving themselves insight into the legal system as well.

Our 2020 Mock Trial Team competed in the FSU Sunshine State Showdown mock trial competition against twelve other teams. They were the ONLY team to go undefeated all four rounds, and came home WINNERS of the competition for the second year in a row.  They competed against mock trial teams from schools all around the state, including:  Bolles,  American Heritage High School in Boca Raton,  Lakeland Christian School,  Chiles High School,  Stanton College Preparatory School,  William R. Boone High School,  Hialeah Senior High,  The King’s Academy in West Palm Beach,  Miami Arts Studio.

This amazing group of teens put in hundreds of hours preparing for this competition —from analyzing the mock case (including all witness statements, exhibits, objections, and rules of evidence), to preparing their opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, and closing arguments, to perfecting each of these things prior to competition. One of the team members, Linnea Stuart, not only received a “top attorney” award, but she was the only competitor in the entire competition to score the highest points as an attorney for both the Plaintiff and Defense. Additionally, one of the newest members of the team, Haley Bolam, received a “top witness” award for her role in the trial. The team is coached by Kendra New, a local attorney who grew up participating in the Clay County Teen Court program.
